Zincalume®

Zincalume® coated steel combines the barrier protection of aluminium with the sacrificial protection of zinc, giving the advantage of both metals. The resulting alloy coating enhances corrosion resistance, making it ideal for applications like roofing and cladding.

For residential homes, New Zealand Steel warrants that, when used as a roofing product, Zincalume® will not perforate through corrosion within 15 years in moderate and inland environments. For commercial buildings such as schools and warehouse, refer to New Zealand Steel for details of commercial warranties.

A moderate environment is characterised by:
*Little or no salt deposits
*The occasional smell of salt in the air
*Typically starts 500-1000 metres from breaking surf such as is found on exposed coasts, or in the immediate vicinity of calm salt water such as estuaries

Not recommended (or warranted) in severe or very severe environments.

Commercial Warranties

Commercial warranties are issued through Taranaki Steelformers by New Zealand Steel and the terms are specific to each contract.

In order to ensure the appropriate product is specified for the intended service life in any given environment, New Zealand Steel is keen to be consulted as early as possible in the design stage to ensure correct material selection and backing by an appropriate warranty.

Warranty applications are generally made through the roofing manufacturer and warranty periods and conditions are assessed by New Zealand Steel.

Factors such as roof design, roof pitch, profile, coating type, internal and external environments and other special conditions are all assessed at the time of the warranty application. Maintenance requirements will be specified as part of the warranty.

Draft warranties are available from New Zealand Steel to support tenders for specific projects. The terms and conditions of the draft will remain unchanged providing that the terms of the project are unaltered.

A warranty is issued on the satisfactory completion of the contract. Installation must be carried out in accordance with New Zealand Steel’s requirements and according to good trade practices as detailed in the “Profiled Metal Roofing Design and Installation Handbook”.

A site inspection by New Zealand Steel may be carried out prior to the issuing of any warranty.

Maintenance

The maintenance programme specified in the warranty must be complied with to maximise the life of the product and to validate the warranty.

All roofing and cladding products are subject to the cumulative effects of weather, dust and other deposits. Normal rain washing will remove most accumulated atmospheric contaminants from roofs. For wall cladding, manual washing every 3 to 12 months, depending on the paint system, is recommended in moderate to very severe environments to prevent accumulation of dirt, debris or other material not removed by rain washing. For areas that do not receive any or adequate rain washing (called unwashed areas) such as soffits, wall cladding under eaves, underside of gutters, fascias, sheltered areas of garage doors and unwashed roof areas, more extensive manual washing is required. Similarly, other high risk areas, around flues, under television aerials or overhanging trees and sites prone to mould, lichen, bird droppings or debris, need to have extensive manual washing.

Regular washing of steel products increases the durability by reducing attack from airborne salts and pollutants. Steel surfaces should be manually washed with water and a sponge or a soft nylon-bristled brush. For large areas it may be more appropriate to use water blasting at pressures up to 20Mpa.

Caring for Colorsteel®
Colorsteel® products are made to be durable and low maintenance, but they still require looking after.

The limits of rain
Areas that aren’t reached by rainfall needs to be cleaned manually, to ensure debris doesn’t build up. Cleaing your Colorsteel® product manually will increase the longevity, as it reduces the effects from salt and other pollutants in the air. It’s is also a matter of keeping your Colorsteel® warranty valid.

Areas that require a more extensive clean:
*Soffits
*Wall cladding under eaves
*Underside of gutters
*Fascias
*Sheltered areas of garage doors and unwashed roof areas
*Around flues
*Under television aerials
*Sites prone to mould, lichen, bird droppings or debris

Clear your gutters
Gutters can become clogged by leaves, twigs and other debris. This can cause a number of problems around your home such as a leaky roof, mould and mildew. Clear your gutters every three months to ensure they function correctly.

Catching issues early
Regular roof maintenance will significantly reduce the chances of damage. Examine your roof at least twice a year, this will allow you to respond to any issues before they become more serious.

Inside your home and ceiling space look out for:
*Places where the ceiling is sagging
*Signs of water damage or leaking
*Dark spots that might indicate mould
*Outside light peeking through

Outside your home look out for:
*Fastenings that appear loose
*Roof attachments that appear loose
*Clogged or loose gutters and/or downpipes

If you notice any of these issues, contact your local Steelformers branch for advice.
